Gareth Southgate is niet langer de bondscoach van de Engelse nationale ploeg. De keuzeheer heeft na acht jaar afscheid genomen van The Three Lions.
Southgate haalde twee keer op de rij de finale van het Europees Kampioenschap, maar werd vaak afgemaakt in de media. De oefenmeester zou het beschikbare spelersmateriaal niet optimaal hebben gebruikt.

En ook na zijn vertrek bij Engeland zijn de reacties op sociale media niet mals. De fans zagen Southgate liever eerder dan nu vertrekken. Op X werd er dan ook gevierd dat Southgate zijn biezen heeft gepakt bij de Engelse nationale ploeg. 'Zou vroeger moeten zijn gebeurd', en 'hij heeft letterlijk niets bereikt', zijn maar een paar van de reacties.
Toch zijn de cijfers van Southgate bij Engeland niet slecht. In 102 wedstrijden wist de bondscoach 64 keer te winnen, twintig keer gelijk te spelen en achttien keer te verliezen met een winstratio van 65,2%. Twee keer werd Engeland tweede op het EK en op het WK van 2018 haalde het de halve finale. In 2022 werd Engeland in de kwartfinale uitgeschakeld.

And particularly at the European Championship just gone, it appeared Southgate's side had a reached a bit of a crossroads, caught somewhat uncomfortably between the old and the new. Perhaps the introduction of a new manager may tidy up that transition a bit. No guarantee, though.

He should’ve won the euros against an awful Italy side but his defensive tactics killed the team.
This time around he had a fantastic team & he couldn’t get the best out of them.
England didn’t even deserve to be in the final, it was all luck.

Goes to show how shit england are since people are celebrating losing 2 finals 😂 and calling Southgate era the best we’ve seen. No wonder Arsenal fans love celebrating 2nd place , it all makes sense now

Perfect time for Southgate to resign. We had a bunch of world class players who mostly play the same club style being asked to bore opponents to death. I'll bet good money that if you add up all the yards of Rice or Walker passes during tournament, 80%+ never went forward
